ANDERSON, Rufus
(1796-1880)
   American MISSIONARY, statesman and theorist who developed the CONCEPT of self-supporting Indigenous CHURCHES. From 1832 to 1866 he was the general secretary of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, the major American missionary organization in the nineteenth century. His major work is Foreign Missions
   Their Relations and Claims (1869).
